克里斯费尽周折终于赢得了在一家声名显赫的股票投资公司实习的机会，但是实习期间没有薪水，而且最终只有一个人可以成功进入股票投资公司。为了通向幸福之路，克里斯决定走下去，儿子也成了他奋斗的力量。为了省钱，每天晚上克里斯带着儿子去收容所，吃饭靠领救济，期间还与儿子躲在地铁站里的公共厕所里。但这些并没有摧毁父子间的亲情与他们的信念，他相信幸福总会落到自己的身上。最后，凭借过人的智慧与勤恳的努力，克里斯终于迎来了那幸福的时刻。

妻子的离去对他来说是极为沉重的打击，让他对幸福的追求产生了怀疑：幸福只是能追求，仅此能追求而已。他在困难面前甚至连弃自己而去的老婆，都没有时间去抱怨，电影的心理矛盾逐步上升。生活就是这样，当一个人陷入困境的时候，各种麻烦也会随之成群结队而来。所有的好运就像正在膨胀的宇宙一样，快速地远离我们远去。一个个接踵袭来的打击
都会使人喘不过气来、都会使人很快的忘掉快乐的模样，就像是末日已到，幻灭既成。
